Injustice: The Foundation of Sin (Supplemental)

If you were at The Bridge Church this past Sunday for worship you would have heard me talk about the story of Nathan's Rebuke of David after his sin with Bathsheba. It's a famous Bible story that I maintained we had largely missed the point about. You can listen to it here, or on our iTunes podcast, but the gist of the message was that David was incensed buy the rich man's exploitation of his poor neighbour - and when Nathan confronted David with the truth that HE was the rich man - it was the injustice of the whole scenario that Nathan was rebuking, rather than the specific tri-fold sin of adultery, deception and murder.

The application of the message was that we as Christians need to be as bothered by injustice in the world as God is, and not buy into the lie that we can passively ignore it without also being culpable. It was a pretty intense presentation but the action item that I left the congregation with was the very specific, local and timely issue of prostitution in Canada. As you can see in the video I've embedded below this paragraph, prostitution is a real issue of injustice in this country - and there is a media war going on for the hearts and minds of Canadians on this issue where one side would like you to believe that it's all about empowerment, and choice and safety - but the numbers, and the real stories of people who have managed to escape the lifestyle tell a shockingly different tale. If you weren't around this weekend at The Bridge Church to see this 3 minute clip in the service than I'd urge you to watch it now.

The good folks at Defend Dignity have given us a means to take part, in even a small way, in the fight against injustice and exploitation in this country. I'd urge you to take some time to follow this link over to their website and to make use of their template to write a letter to your MP expressing support for bill C-36. If you feel a little bolder why not schedule a visit with your MP or even give them a call. We live in a democracy, which means that for better or worse the will of the people is what becomes law. How sad it would be to lose this opportunity because those in this country who care about injustice were too passive to speak up and do anything?

If I learned anything from the story of Nathan's rebuke of David, it's that I'm not nearly angry enough about these injustices. I learned that too often I'm passive because I don't see the victims as real people, but rather just news-bites and issues that don't directly affect me. It's time that changed.

It's time that changed for all of us.
